dverse Haibun Monday – 5 prompt by Toni (Kanzensakura)
The backyard is a pen and ink drawing of lines and splotches in snow. A Junco flits from a frosted tree to the rust-coated wire fence. Clumps of grey grass shake off the rime and sway in an icy breeze that looses an avalanche from the drooping pine. It falls with a dull plop amidst the shades of charcoal and white in a finely sketched scene of serene. My eye catches a pop of brilliant pink in a tangle of snow covered branches of the quince shrub. Delicate blushing buds bravely nod as winter rudely interrupted spring. But, still there is the promise of renewal soon.
Winter hangs on long
spring gently tightens her grip
this sparring won’t last.
…”Delicate blushing buds bravely nod as winter rudely interrupted spring.” Love this line! Winter personified is quite common….but the idea of her being rude is quite the twist! And I also like the idea of winter and spring sparring…….such a good description of the photo and of the transition between seasons. Nicely done!

Winter rudely interrupted spring – indeed! A wonderful light-hearted perspective. Loved it.

“this sparring won’t last” but it will be fierce until the end…not said but implied. The essence of life and death captured so concisely here. Well done.

I am looking forward to that spring renewal….Love the prose details of snow, and haiku line: this sparring won’t last.
Thanks for joining us for Haibun Monday Debi ~ Have a good week ~

Indeed the winter is so much an ink drawing… colors leaving and then the splashes of colors seems to glow even more intense…

I love your opening line and then the line about spring and winter sparring. It does often feel like they’re fighting to see who can prevail. I really enjoyed your haibun, Debi, it’s beautiful!

In this ‘sparring’ I would hope for the blossom…but I fear the worst. Sigh.

What a cute little bird is the junco! (I had to look it up to find out what it was.) The whole scene comes alive in your words.
