February Blues

My favorite song by Rosemary Clooney

“Hello and welcome to another exciting round of our most awaited segment “On Popular Demand.” Music is something which binds us together. It causes two people to share an emotion so strong that it can hardly be put into words…  pick a favourite song of your own choice and to go wild.”

February, cold and bleak, snow fell last week
white, spangled… now smudged, trampled
like my heart. Trusting you wasn’t smart.
Valentine’s Day came and went, I spent
it alone, hoping the phone would ring
I’d hear someone say, “hey, love ya, babe”
but my hope was dashed and I felt like trash
discarded, disdained, restrained by the bonds
of a love gone wrong from the start.

February, I’m looking for you to end, tend
to days of grey and leave me alone. Don’t play
cat and mouse with my heart, you’ve been a part
of my life for too long. You’ve sung your sad song,
you can’t stay. Let March zip away, then April and May
come springing in. Let the birds croon a sweet tune
and the sun melt the ice I’ve felt the winter long, oh,
send me a guy, with stars in his eyes, just for me.
Then month number two I’ll relent and pardon you.

You created a soulful rhythm with your careful use of internal rhyme. I can easily imagine these words being put to music.

pardoned February! I love this – wonderful What a sexy voice she has – thought she was Monroe for a second.

  9. What killer pauses! And your comparisons go right for the heart. I love that even after all the hurt, the speaker doesn’t lose hope. She knows (she wants) that eventually, as the seasons pass, her time will come… bringing her those eyes.

Lots of soul and yum. ♥

The harsh cold of being alone certainly sings in this wonderful poem – oddly i find spring harder – keeping up we cheery people when you’re feeling blue can be an extra effort

  16. Our love lives Debi seem to be at the mercy of hope but we cling on for all we are worth. Such a well written poem.
