A winter woodland walk just before dusk
past balsam, cypress and pines of many kinds
Ivy trails up the rough-cast bark of a sycamore
hugging and twining its way to the crest.
As I press on to the top of the rise the spherical
sky begins to color, striations of burgundy, rose
and yellow, an ingenious palette of an artist’s
creation just at the horizon of this heavenly dome.
In the dwindling light the fragrance of green things,
spicy, piney, sharp and clean, wrap around me
like a warm memory of Christmases past.
I walk back to the road with a feeling of peace-
renewed, refreshed. A mystical, spiritual reprieve
that leaves me feeling in tune with the universe… with God.
