dverse …Talk on a cereal box…a smile on a dog prompt by Brian
“So today, I want you to write about philosophy. It could be the overarching philosophy of your life, or it could be the philosophy of a particular thing – like say, your philosophy on giving to the poor, your philosophy on finances, your philosophy on hair care products, your philosophy on education…Matter of fact I want the title of your poem to start with:

The philosophy of ______
My philosophy of ______
A philosophy of ______

“We’re all in this together alone.”  – Lily Tomlin

I’m caged in
pacing back and forth
watching shadows move.
I reach for you
your hand reaches back
we touch, we talk,
we live, we learn,
we lean on one another.
In the wee dark hours
I hear your soft breathing
and though I know you are
just a fingertip away
I am all alone.
When the death angel comes
and you are grasping me tight
all alone I’ll ooze
between the bars
leaving an empty cage.

I think this better fits what I meant to say that even when we are together, we are alone.

I’m caged in
pacing back and forth
watching shadows move.
I reach for you
your hand reaches back
we touch, we talk,
we live, we learn,
we lean on one another.
In the wee dark hours
I hear your soft breathing
and though I know you are
just a fingertip away
Still, I am all alone.

I think we are all alone when the death angel comes ~ We can share our sufferings with others near, but the burden & emptiness rests all on us, alone ~

  2. this is so powerful, I felt the darkness bleed with every word. When the angel of death comes, we’re all alone I’d think… Amazing piece.

There is comfort in community, in realizing that we are not alone – whether it is physically or spiritually. Death is one of those times that we can be thankful for those connections that we have made in life – because I would not want to face it alone.

Yes, even when we are together, we are together, alone…..once one learns that, though, we can truly have a great relationship.

Ooh, I like the ending especially. No matter how much we lean on one another, in the end we are always alone. Thank you for this.

When the hum of fellowship diminishes, when your loved one look away for the briefest of moments, naked, afraid, & alone we take the shimmering shadows hand, step out of our husk, & move on to what we all hope is the next big thing; too soon for many of us, for death takes no holidays.

Yes, powerfully put, in truth we are alone I the hard parts – it is love as joy which makes us one. Perhaps if we saw death as joyful that too could connect us.

there are def. moments when even the closest person cannot accompany and hold us any more…jesus has promised he will be there then – so that is my hope…being held by him…

  11. Oh.. No.. Alone.. the greaTest illusion of all in human being..
ah.. to connect to the last dying gasp of breath
to a drop of air.. a pollen of flower if
    only a sneeze.. is cosmic
    oneness of delight
    or
    NOT sadly
    in Truth for
    some.. but
    as long
    as
    breathe goes ON..
    there is Now
    and another
    Now..
    for potential
    ALLONE..:)

Yes, we are born alone and eventually we die alone. In between it is nice to have the comfort of someone else’s soft breathing….

  14. Death, just as birth is our own personal transition. Even though we are still alone in a sense, I would think that being physically alone could be very traumatic.
As others have stated, this has a powerful message. I enjoyed it very much. 🙂

We can feel most alone in those dark, before dawn hours, even as someone sleep-breathes beside us.
